Conflict 1: East-West Schism (Background)
Carolingian dynasty in France converts to Christianity. Charlemagne is crowned Holy Roman Emperor by the Pope in (controls areas in Germany and some in Italy, but not Rome)

Conflict 1: East-West Schism
Tensions build between Christians in West and Christians in East (Byzantine Empire) The East splits from the Catholic Church in 1054, and calls itself the Eastern Orthodox Church. This is known as the East-West Schism. Schism=split

Conflict #2: Investiture Controversy
Controversy over whether the Pope or the king would name (invest) powerful local church officials, such as bishops. Major Question: Can the Pope overthrow the emperor? Can the emperor overthrow the Pope?
