1 TEXAS SURFACE WATER QUALITY MONITORING INFORMATION SYSTEM
GIS IN WATER RESOURCES CE 394K.3 David Trujillo November 21, 2006

2 MOTIVATION Need information for a water quality study for Lake Texoma.
Ideally you would look for data in a national database (EPA’s STORET)

3 STORET STATIONS STORET contains data from the following Stations
No Monitoring Stations in Texas? November 2004 EPA

4 TCEQ SWQM STATIONS Texas has a very complete network of monitoring stations

5 INTEGRATION If databases were integrated:

6 EPA STORET Repository of marine, freshwater and biological monitoring data Developed in the 1960’s Currently two systems: Legacy (1998) and Modernized Users: Federal, State, Local, Tribes, Academia, Groups

7 EPA STORET Updated once a month

8 TCEQ TRACS-SWQM Texas equivalent of STORET since 1967
8,300 monitoring stations Government, River Authorities, Organizations, etc. ASCII Files:

9 CURRENT STATUS Need to maintain a local STORET database
Legacy Data Format STORET is very complex STORET doesn’t conform the needs of the State Different data standards Cross

10 FUTURE INTEGRATION SWQMIS Replace outdated system Meet business needs
Provide efficient access to public Analysis Tools Enhanced Queries EPA WQX January 2007, September 2009 Internet Submittals New front-end, tools XML

11 WQX Doesn’t require states to run EPA software WQX Validate
Header (.xml) Other Response Header Payload Doesn’t require states to run EPA software

12 eXtensible Markup Language
Definition, transmission, and validation of data between systems XML schema are the files that define data elements and structure Example converting from ASCII to XML L703568, ,00945,pH,5.5 <document> <row> <OrganizationIdentifier>L703568</OrganizationIdentifier > <EventDate> </EventDate > <EventEndTime>00945</EventEndTime > <Parameter>pH</Parameter > <Value>5.5</Value > </row> </document>

13 WQX XML Schema

14 FUTURE WORK Legacy Data Integration Abstraction Layer Appear Unified
CUAHSI- Large Amounts of Data Database Migration Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) Convert Parameters (STORET 9000+)

15 FUTURE WORK Mapping Applications Example: Search Wizard
