The fall Icebreaker Regatta at the Crescent Sail Yacht Club on Lake St. Clair is a longtime traditional event that closes the official regatta season for the DRSF
Saturday saw six Stars on the starting line with an early afternoon start, mostly sunny weather and gusty variable winds anywhere from 8 to 15 knots. Despite some spirited competition, Terry Gibney and his crew Will Libcke dominated by winning all four Saturday races. Saturday evening a pulled pork dinner and typically great camaraderie was enjoyed at the sail club.
Sunday dawned with rain and overcast skies, but the rain cleared up and the wind continued gusty from 9 to 15 knots. The big difference Sunday was sloppy waves reflecting off the coastline, challenging the competitors and rocking the race committee boats. Two races were run. Once again Gibney and Libcke finished first in each race, but Neal Turluck and crew Erik Gutomuth were close behind. Bob Teitge and crew Chris Henry, who had a 3rd, two 2nds and a DNC on Saturday, took 3rd in Sunday’s first race but retired due to a mast failure during the second race, which was the 6th and final race of the two-day regatta.
