What it does: Paints a picture with senses; details (imagery) Establishes mood/atmosphere Establishes empathy; connection to text How to use: Focus on a dominant impression Make sure all details support the Dom. Imp. Create memorable images for the reader through diction Appeal to all the senses

9 “A Mistake That Should Last a Lifetime”
Step One: Read the text & answer surface questions 1. What is the writer’s mistake? 2. What details does she recall leading up to the mistake? 3. Looking back at the event, what are the writer’s thoughts today? 4. What lasting impression does the writer take from the experience? Step Two: Re-read the text & color code 1. Yellow: indicates where the author recalls the incident 2. Pink: shows where the author reflects on what the incident means to her today
