1 Chapter 2: Setting Goals, Achieving Dreams
DO NOW: 1) Jot down 3 things you are grateful for. 2) Meditate at your desk for 2 minutes. 3) Take 2 minutes to write down the most meaningful experience of the past 24 hours.

2 Positivity Pays Off Students who were hopeful graduated at rates 16% higher than non-hopeful students. New research says that it can predict academic success more accurately than intelligence or even standardized test scores.

3 Setting FOCUSed Goals:
F Fit O Ownership C Concreteness U Usefulness S Stretch Goal: Get all As and Bs this semester. Fit: Does this fit your values, character, and who you are as a person? Ownership: Do you really want it? Concreteness: Is it possible? Can it be real? Usefulness: Does it serve a purpose? Why do it? Stretch: Is it challenging? Push your limits to achieve it!

4 STEP 1: Accept the FOCUS challenge. STEP 2: React to the challenge.
STEP 3: Use new knowledge to gain insights. STEP 4: Use your insights to propel you toward action. Completing the Goal What do I already know? Learned something new Make it real!

5 How Motivated Are You? How Are You Motivated?
Extrinsic (external) – motivated to learn in order to get a grade, earn credits, or complete a requirement Intrinsic (internal)- motivated to learn because they’re curious, facinated, challenged, or because they truly want to master a subject.

6 The C-Factors CURIOSITY CONTROL CAREER OUTLOOK CHALLENGE
Do you want to learn? Do you believe you can control how successful you’ll be? Are you future/goal oriented? Is there enough challenge? Is it too much or not enough?

7 Activity Based on the entrance exam, go to the white board that has your most challenging course: 1. English/Comp 2. Math 3. History/ Poly Sci./Phil As a group, Fill out the Control Box for that class!

10 Multitasking Does it waste time?
Multitasking actually limits our ability to focus on tasks. Multitasking hurts your brain’s ability to learn. According to one study, your IQ drops by 10 points when you’re distracted by or phone calls. Like the power grid on a hot summer day, multitasking overloads your brain and can cause a “brownout,” or a simple lack of power to meet the need. Multitasking can cause extra stress and can actually cost you time, since you’ll constantly need to “reboot” to switch your attention between multiple tasks. Does it waste time? Write out on line 1: “ Multitasking is worse than a lie” line 2: 1 through 27, “1 2 3…” Now write one line alternating the two lines above, “M 1 u 2 l 3…” Which is faster?
