MOTOWN- A combination of different genres prior to the ‘60s including rhythm and blues, pop, gospel rhythms, and ballad harmonies. Motown managed to break down the social and racial barriers and become the most important independent record label of the early 1960s in the history of pop music. MOTOWN Facts Created by Berry Gordon Jr. on December 14th, 1959.
Originated in Detroit, Michigan. Motown (the label) was the first American music label to be owned by an African-American. It also was the first label to successfully market black artists to the white mainstream. Berry Gordy Jr. not only created his own label but a whole new genre as well.

Jackson 5 Formed by brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael Jackson. Formed in 1964. Had great success with the Motown Record Label and the style of Motown.

Born Stevland Hardaway Morris Blinded soon after birth. Signed with Motown Records at age 11 Still performs and records for Motown to this day.

MOTOWN The genre of Motown has grew to an extent with many bands/artists till the 1980s. The rules of Motown loosened which made albums critically acclaimed and successful. Motown lost some hit makers including Norman Whitfield which made Motown fall off. Remnants of Motown still play today and have influenced current artists with their cool rhythms and catchy tones.
