Physical Oceanography Jonathan Whitefield Ocean Science
By: Kelly Begay

A Brief Summary In the past two months I have been working with Dr. Jonathan Whitefield. So far we have discussed what his topic does for the world and what he has to do when working. Physical Oceanography has many types of functions but my mentor studies in ocean currents circulation. These circulations transfer the heat and fresh water between the Pacific and Atlantic ocean. Even though this function seems small, it effects the world greatly.

Hyperlink On our last project, we had to give an MP3 with a voice recording explaining our mentor’s studies. This MP3 is located at

Equipment While talking to Jonathan, he told me about the equipment he uses for his work and what they do. A few main ones he uses are; AUVs Gliders Moorings CTD He told me that an AUV monitors and drives on the ocean floor. It knows where to go by coordinates set by the scientists. A CTD is also a tool they use that helps measure salt and warm water in ocean currents. The CTD also records the speeds of the current. A glider was something Jonathan was controlling or “driving” on his last project. The glider is very quick at taking repeated measurements that can help with sampling resolution.

Currents Movements of water are called currents. Currents are usually made with a flow of another big movement of water. A few examples of currents are surface currents and deep ocean circulation currents. Another thing that draws currents is a mixture of heat and cold air. Surface Currents- Movement on top of the oceans surface.
