Spain claims an Empire

2. 1. What is the name of the treaty between Spain and
Portugal which helped Portugal claim much of eastern South America?

3. The Treaty of Tordesillas (tawr-day-SEEL-yahs) moved the former claim line held by Spain 800 miles west.
This line changed the way these two countries claimed territories. Portugal could claim land east of the line and Spain could claim land west.

9. Ferdinand Magellan set out to reach Asia by sailing around South America. Magellan never finished the trip because of his death but some of his crew sailed completely around the world (Circumnavigate).
Of the 237 men who started out with Magellan, only 18 made the entire trip around the globe. Magellan is still given credit for this accomplishment.
