History Detectives 2 Evidence and Confessions

2 We’re back!

4 Evidence

5 Go back to the time & place of the crime
Go back to the time & place of the crime. Then, of course, you use the evidence to figure out what happened.

6 What kinds of evidence can you get from history?
Primary sources, of course! They come from the time period and are great evidence to show what was actually going on.

7 But what is the best proof that someone committed a crime or why they did it?
Confession!

8 So how do you get a confession from history?
Lots of the people are dead! But not everybody. Get interviews! What did they leave behind that we can use to show what they were thinking and saying? Quotes!

9 “I in the Burying Place may see
Graves shorter than I; From Death’s Arrest no Age is free, Young children too may die; My God, may such an awful Sight, Awakening be to me! Oh! That by early Grace I might For Death prepared be.” From a Colonial School Book

10 “All of our colonies are independent of each other: Suppose them independent of the British Parliament,--what power do you leave to govern the whole? None at all. You split and divide the empire into a number of petty, insignificant states.” Samuel Seabury defends Britain, 1774

11 “A good wife should be like three things that she should not be like
“A good wife should be like three things that she should not be like. Like a snail, she should keep within her own house, but unlike a snail, she should not carry everything she owns on her back at one time. Like an echo, she should speak only when spoken to, but unlike the echo, she should not try to have the last word. Like the town clock, she should always be on time, but unlike the clock, she should not speak loud enough for all the town to hear…” A magazine 1787

12 Quotes Notes 1. Description-Person/Doc 2. Source Id 3. Actual Quote in " " 4. p. # [if any] See handout for other types of P.S. notes
