4 Receive … among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour. From the Gospel according to John, chapter 12, verses 20 to 26

5 Engage On 4th May the Church of England celebrates the witness of the Saints and Martyrs of the Reformation Era. What is significant about this day is that we are not simply remembering ‘our own’ martyrs, those like Cranmer, Ridley and Latimer, who died for maintaining adherence to the Church of England in the face of Roman Catholic persecution. We are also remembering those Roman Catholics who died at the hands of Protestants for maintaining their Faith and allegiance.

6 Engage Some discussion ideas …
Why do you think that people were prepared to stand up against injustice in the church - even to die for their cause? What do you think are issues of hypocrisy or deceit that happen in the UK today? Activity suggestion … Create a banner calling for justice. Video suggestions … Thomas Cranmer, Protestant martyr - The trial of Thomas More (from the film “A man for all seasons”

7 Respond [Reflect for a minute on the worship theme and our engagement …] Merciful God, who, when your Church on earth was torn apart by the ravages of sin, raised up men and women in this land who witnessed to their faith with courage and constancy: give to your Church that peace which is your will, and grant that those who have been divided on earth may be reconciled in heaven, and share together in the vision of your glory. Amen

8 Go out into the world with the light of Christ
Let us bless the Lord Thanks be to God Go out into the world with the light of Christ
