Morning Worship Rules for life – the ten commandments 22nd January 2018 Bishop Justus Church of England School

4 Let the light of Christ shine in our lives
Gather The Lord be with you And also with you Let the light of Christ shine in our lives

5 Receive Then God spoke all these words:
I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me … Moses said to the people, ‘Do not be afraid; for God has come only to test you and to put the fear of him upon you so that you do not sin.’ From the book of Exodus, chapter 20, verses 1, 2, & 20

6 Engage After the Israelites fled from slavery in Egypt they spent many years in the wilderness. During this time they were tested, often they were hungry and thirsty. Their leader, Moses, often had to turn to God for help. One day Moses went up a mountain and God gave Moses a message with commandments that the people should follow so that they would not stray from God. Many of these commandments are still the basis for our laws today.

7 Engage Video suggestion … Rules, rules …
Some discussion ideas … Do you think that the ten commandments are still useful today? Would you get rid of one, or more, and why? What would be your top ten rules for life? Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?” Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair. Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student. Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections. Activity suggestion … Look up the Ten Commandments in the Bible (Exodus 20:1-20) and make your own ten major laws that you think people should live by.

8 Respond Amen We thank you God for the guidance you gave
[Reflect for a minute on the worship theme and our engagement …] We thank you God for the guidance you gave to the people of Israel. Be our guide in our lives. Help us to live lives of peace and harmony with our neighbours and with you. Amen Prayer / reflection technique – Give a summary of the theme and any responses that students may have made, then invite everyone to be still (remind no books open etc – lessen distraction). To pray or reflect on today’s worship. Be quiet for one minute. Then say the prayer …
