3 Creation Genesis 1 & 2

4 The Fall Genesis 3

5 Original Sin Original sin does not have the character of a personal fault. It, like other sins, is more a lack of something than the presence of something. No Grace Grace

6 God’s Master Plan In the beginning: After the Fall:
In God’s image Distorted God’s image Free will Free will Rational Rational Free from sin Born with Original Sin Preternatural gifts: Preternatural gifts lost: - Infused knowledge -- Learning - Immortal requires labor - No illness or suffering -- Mortal - Knew good from evil -- Suffering and -- Acting with will illness - Lived in harmony -- Intellect is weakened Supernatural gift: Will is weakened to sin -- Grace (God’s life) -- Disharmony with others - Supernatural gift: -- Grace is lost

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 9.) You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. 10.) You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

8 Augustine and Origen In Church history, there have been two ways of listing the Ten Commandments. The list preferred by Augustine, and currently the preferred list by Catholics and Lutherans, is the one we’re learning in this class. The list preferred by Origen, and currently preferred by the Orthodox and by most Protestants, involves separating the 1st Commandment and fusing the 9th and 10th Commandments.

9 Did Catholics remove the 2nd Commandment?
CCC 2084: You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them.

10 2nd Commandment Lutherans use the same list of the 10 Commandments as Catholics There are references in the Bible to the use of religious imagery in worship, E.g. Exodus 25:16-22

11 In the ark you are to put the covenant which I will give you.
You shall then make a cover of pure gold, two and a half cubits long, and one and a half cubits wide. Make two cherubim of beaten gold for the two ends of the cover; make one cherub at one end, and the other at the other end, of one piece with the cover, at each end. The cherubim shall have their wings spread out above, sheltering the cover with them; they shall face each other, with their faces looking toward the cover. This cover you shall then place on top of the ark. In the ark itself you are to put the covenant which I will give you. There I will meet you and there, from above the cover, between the two cherubim on the ark of the covenant, I will tell you all that I command you regarding the Israelites.
