First work plan was
Operational ever since.
Lead partners: currently Australia, CEOS, ESA, FAO, Norway, UK, USA & the World Bank.
Many other contributors including UNFCCC, IPCC, universities, technical and policy experts.
Open to new partners.

Provide REDD+ countries with a larger and more targeted package of support than any one international partner can provide alone
Enable consistency or complementarity in support
Ensure support is targeted at country needs to help accelerate progress towards reporting and action
Foster a network of experts to help address challenges and bottlenecks to progress
Facilitate exchanges resources, comparative advantages, south-south collaboration and enable learning between partners
Avoid overlaps and duplication of effort by developing countries and international partners.

Through the collaborative action of its partners, GFOI has:
Assembled a network of world leading partners who help implementing countries on forest monitoring & MRV issues
Published implementation friendly guidance which comply with the IPCC
Built technical capacity in countries
Facilitated wall-to-wall coverage of the world’s forests from multiple satellite sensors
Established network of experts to address obstacles to progress and build consensus
Developed functional methods of coordination and collaboration
Developed Phase 2 to better target country needs and accelerate progress.

8. GFOI Plenary 2018: priorities
In 2018, the GFOI Plenary will focus on efforts to ensure that international support is:
Targeted at priority country needs
Aligns with international reporting requirements
Supports national data needs
Ultimately helps countries to operationalize NFMS and MRV for REDD+

The Plenary aims to:
foster the GFOI network of countries, experts and international practitioners
provide an update on the collaborative efforts partners
identify new opportunities for mutually beneficial collaboration
consult participants on a common approach to Country Needs Assessments
seek to align collaborative implementation with the requirements for international reporting and national data needs
consult GFOI partners on priorities for the Initiative during the period
welcome new partners in to GFOI to coordinate their existing efforts and/or develop new contributions to complement the work of others.
