2 Sound Devices Definition: What is the purpose of using a sound device?
a way of writing that takes into consideration the way words or letters sound in relation to the rest of the work What is the purpose of using a sound device? Create emphasis, add a musical quality

3 Alliteration Definition:
The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginnings of words Example: feathered friends Done on purpose to relate two words Not just: We went to the mall. But: We sat by silently as she was shackled by the police.

4 Repetition Definition: The repeated use of a sound, word, or phrase
Example: In EAP’s The Pit and the Pendulum, Poe repeats the word “down” at the beginning of several paragraphs to imitate the pendulum coming down from the ceiling to kill the prisoner

5 Meow! Onomatopoeia Definition: The use of words that imitate sounds
Example: “Meow” “Wuff” Meow!

6 Practice! Turn to page 603/604/605
Read the poems “Cats,” “Silver,” and “Your World” Answer the questions down the side of the page Create a chart that compares the sound devices in all three poems Alliteration Repetition Onomatopoeia “Cats” “Silver” “Your World”

7 In your Novel … Try to find an example of any of the sound devices in your book Include the example and explain the effect it has on that part of your book (Emphasizes something? Makes something humorous? Other?)
