Combustion
2
Combustion is one category of reactions
Combustion is a very rapid reaction of a substance with oxygen to produce compounds called oxides This process is often called burning
3
Fuel + oxygen oxides + energy
Word equation: Fuel + oxygen oxides + energy The energy is mainly in the form of heat and light Fuel can vary
4
Most important (common) fuels we burn hydrocarbons
Eg. gasoline, natural gas, kerosene, candles Hydrocarbons + oxygen carbon dioxide + water vapour + energy The complete combustion of hydrocarbon fuels produce millions of tonnes of water and carbon dioxide, that are released into the atmosphere
5
Example of hydrocarbon combustion
Butane, a gas at room temperature but a liquid under pressure When butane escapes the lighter through a valve, a spark ignites it 2 C4H O CO H20
6
Incomplete combustion
Incomplete combustion occurs when there is not enough oxygen available Instead of two products, four are formed Carbon monoxide Carbon Carbon dioxide Water Carbon monoxide: is a poisonous gas that combines with hemoglobin in the blood to starve the body of oxygen and results in death
7
Class work and Homework
