1 Below is a list of steps in a scientific method
Below is a list of steps in a scientific method. If Amy wanted to perform an experiment to determine which household item had the greatest acidity. Which sequence should she follow? A Form a hypothesis B Gather information C Perform an experiment D State the problem E Analyze the data       A, B, C, D, E D, C, A, E, B D, B, A, C, E C, B, A, D, E

2 So no one would use the same methods he used
When Thomas Edison was developing the lightbulb, he tested about 600 different materials until he found one that worked the best as a filament. He eventually found a filament that would burn at 16 watts for 1500 hours. Why was it critical that Edison take careful notes during his experiments?       So no one would use the same methods he used So no one else would steal his thoughts and ideas So his efforts could be accurately replicated So he would be recognized for his lengthy experimental process

3 Weigh the liquid to determine its mass.
Tim is conducting an experiment with the following liquids: water, vegetable oil, vinegar, and orange juice. He has a scale and a graduated 100-milliliter cylinder. He wants to find the density of each liquid. What is the missing step in his process? 1 Weigh the empty graduated cylinder 2 Pour 100 ml of liquid into the cylinder 3 Weigh the full graduated cylinder 4 ? 5 Calculate density using the density equation       Weigh the liquid to determine its mass. Subtract the weight of the empty cylinder from the weight of the full cylinder to determine the mass of the liquid. Add the weight of the empty cylinder to the weight of the full cylinder to determine the mass of the liquid. Pour out the contents of the cylinder and weigh again.

4 The Scientific Method Study your mini-book. Make sure you can identify what you should be doing during each step.

5 What should I be able to do?
SPI 0707.Inq.1 I can design a simple experiment. SPI 0707.Inq.2 I can use lab tools during an experiment. SPI 0707.Inq.3 I can translate data into a table or graph. SPI 0707.Inq.4 I can use evidence to draw a conclusion. SPI 0707.Inq.5 I can identify bias or experimental error.

6 TCAP Review: Scientific Method
Make an observation State the problem/Ask a question Gather Information/Research Form a hypothesis Test the hypothesis Analyze data Draw conclusions Communicate results

7 Today’s Lab: Drops on a Penny
With a partner, complete the lab using the steps of the Scientific Method. Each of you will glue the lab handout on page 10 of your composition book. When lab is complete, clean up any water, push in stools, and head back to your seat. At your seat, you need an expo board and marker.

8 Show what you know… What skill is a scientist using when she listens to the sounds that whales make? Making observations Drawing conclusions Making a hypothesis Interpreting data

9 Show what you know… Which question would be the best scientific question for an experiment? Who made the first microscope? How many giraffes live in Africa? Does the amount of salt in water affect the temperature at which it boils? How long ago did dinosaurs live on the Earth?

10 Show what you know… Which of the following hypotheses is written correctly? If I freeze a tennis ball, then it will not bounce as high. If a tennis ball is frozen, it won’t bounce as high as one that is not frozen. Frozen tennis balls will not bounce as high. If I heat up a tennis ball it will bounce high.

11 Show what you know… In science, an educated guess is called a/an
Conclusion Hypothesis Observation Question

12 Show what you know… When you decide whether or not the data supports the original hypothesis, you are Making Observations Asking Questions Forming a Hypothesis Drawing Conclusions
