HGi Symposium in Venice march 8&9 , Introduction to hgi downstreaming Luca Giacomello, HGI Chairman

Shutting down HGI… HGI was never intended to last for ever
Initial duration indicated in the Statutes: 2 years As we did like it this was replaced by an assumed renewal every 2 years, unless there was a vote to sunset The Board kept the responsibility to monitor the technical and financial health of the organisation throughput the years. In particular: A major strategic review in 2014 led to increased emphasis on the Smart Home, and the creation of the Services and Business Insight Group (SBI) HGI operator founder members, and the full Board, have monitored major trends and recent changes in the SDO landscape and way of working, fragmentation of markets, major differences in markets between countries, etc. A real need for consolidation in the SDOs’ and interest groups’ participations arose

Shutting down HGI…(2) A range of options was intensely debated
e.g. a merger, significant slimming down, and controlled closure .... It was agreed by the Board and approved by HGI members to : Complete the ongoing important topics Archive both these, and many previous HGI specifications, so they remain available to operators and vendors alike for several years where appropriate, disseminate/ promote some topics into other organizations (first thought: progressing the smart home related work in oneM2M)
4
Some already ongoing actions
Downstream to OneM2M of the whole set of activities related to smart home and in particular: Home gateway Smart Home architecture Smart Home Device template (SDT, open source activity) Publication as ETSI documents of some of the HGI deliverables finalized in the last period (details will follow): Home Gateway Smart Home architecture Wireless Home Area Networks requirements Open Platform 2.0
5
Open discussion on future actions
Main topics: Again, smart home Wi-Fi requirements Hardware virtualization/modularity as general topic OSGi specific requirements for Open Platform Hybrid access use cases and business requirements SBI-like (unique WG dealing with business insights) continuation Did I forget something?
6
Some (almost personal) views…reactions?
On Smart home OneM2M could increase its role as aggregator for harmonizing different approaches (already collecting OIC, Allseen, HGI SDT etc.); maybe leveraging on an operators’ internal group? Wi-Fi requirements: operators’ group and single HGI contributors could push for testable requirements on channel selection, repeaters, NFC use, hotspot to complement Wi-Fi certification, according to HGI views on the topics Open Platform will hopefully become an ETSI spec; how OSGi could manage that is to be discussed (we have different IPR policies) Could ETSI take over the maintenance of the test specifications produced by HGI on OP 2.0, soon public? If not the test activities? Or prpl? Hybrid access doc can become a contribution to BBF further developments on that area SBI could converge to BBF project according to the proposal received Hardware virtualization can be a topic for future developments by prpl, possibly also involving other silicon vendors Prpl carrier grade OpenWrt : a good occasion to aggregate a critical mass for getting tangible results and exploit them in future HGs software deployment
