1 3.3 Electron Configuration Objective 4:b and c
Chemistry

2 Essential Questions What is an electron configuration?
What is the Aufbau Principle? What are the 2 notations and how do you write them?

3 Electron Configuration
Electron configuration is the arrangement of electrons in an atom The two types of electron configuration is standard configuration and noble gas notation.

4 Electron Configuration (cont)
Recall: orbitals can only hold 2 electrons Orbitals come in the following sets: 1 of s, 3 of p, 5 of d, and 7 of f The orbitals listed in order of increasing energy would be s, p, d, and f.

5 Blocks of the Periodic Table
Energy levels are represented by n n equals the row number on the periodic table

6 Aufbau Principle Electrons enter the lowest available energy orbital first

7 Example: Nitrogen atomic # 7
Standard notation: 1s2 2s2 2p3 Noble Gas Notation: [He] 2p3

8 Essential Questions What is an electron configuration?
What is the Aufbau Principle? What are the 2 notations and how do you write them?
