I will identify elements on the periodic table
Happy Monday August 20, 2018 1. Today’s Date What is the periodic table? What is an element? 3. Journal #9 Color and label the periodic table 4. Homework I will identify elements on the periodic table 2. Objective
2
Building Blocks of Matter
The fundamental building blocks of matter are atoms and molecules. These particles make up elements and compounds.
3
Atoms and Elements An atom is the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical identity of that element. An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler, stable substances and is made of one type of atom.
4
The Periodic Table Elements are arranged vertically into groups that share common chemical properties.
5
The Periodic Table Elements are also organized horizontally into rows, or periods.
6
Alkali Metals The elements on the left side of the table (Groups 1 and 2) are reactive metals The elements of group 1 are known as the alkali metals.
7
Alkaline-earth Metals
The elements of Group 2 are called alkaline-earth metals. Alkaline-earth metals are also too reactive to be found in nature as pure elements.
8
Transition Elements Transition elements are metals
They are good conductors of electricity Unreactive Ex: Gold
9
Halogens. Halogens are the most reactive nonmetals.
10
Noble Gases Unreactive
11
Metalloids Metalloids: B, Si, Ge, Ar, Sb, Te
Properties between metals and nonmetals
12
Your Assignment Color and Label the periodic table:
Alkali Metals (pink/red) Alkaline Earth Metals (orange) Transition Elements (yellow) Metalloids (green) Halogens (blue) Noble Gases (purple)
