NEO LIBERALISM & NEW RIGHT PERSPECTIVES
EDUCATION
2
NEO –LIBERALISM Is an economic ‘doctrine’ (theory) that has influenced education is a BIG WAY… STATE SHOULD NOT provide services such as education/ health & welfare. Neo liberalism = state should not interfere with how individuals do anything…
3
Neo liberalism Government should encourage competition. Privatisation.
School should become like a business…only then can we compete on the global market. Competition between schools can drive up standards.
4
The New Right The New Right Has NEO LIBERAL IDEALS
Want education to be business like (The state cannot meet people’s needs.) 1) Functionalist & New Right =similar…. 2) Believe that some people are more talented than others. 3) Belief in competition…so the best rise to the top. 4)Nationalisation is very important.
5
New Right The current education system falls short. It is not an effective education system. Parents, pupils and employers have no say, therefore the system is poor and inefficient. Schools are not answerable to their consumers therefore = lower standards.
6
Chubb & Moe: Consumer Choice.
State education in the US has failed because: A) There is no equal opportunities. Failed those that are ’disadvantaged’. B) Fails to produce people that can service the needs of the economy. C) Private schools = higher quality… because they are answerable to the parents etc.
7
Chubb & Moe “ Lets put control of education in to the hands of consumers (PARENTS & THE LOCAL COMMUNITY)” This would improve quality and efficiency. Children/ Families would be given a voucher to spend on buying education from a school. This would be the schools main income. Schools would need to compete.
8
“The State does have a couple of roles” say the New Right.
1) The state does have a FRAMEWORK FOR EDUCATION…OFSTED / LEAGUE TABLES ETC. So schools do have some competition and element of choice. 2) State is important in transmitting a shared culture…National Curriculum. 3) New Right feel the education system should promote British Christian values. 4) The New Right oppose a multicultural curriculum.
9
Ao3 Evaluating the New Right.
Gerwitz & Ball: competition between schools benefit the middle classes. The use the information and their economic and cultural capital to get access to the best schools. E.g moving in to a more affluent area. Low educational standards is because of lack of funding in state schools and inequality in our society.
10
On one hand they want parents to choose, on the other hand they want a ‘National Curriculum, run by the state.’ Marxists say the education system promotes ruling class values and forgets lower social classes and ethnic minorities.
