Plagiarism is using someone else’s work and passing it off as your own.
Buying, stealing , or borrowing any printed, written, or previously distributed documents without proper citation Taking credit for a paper written (wholly or partially) by someone else Copying from another source without citing, either on purpose or by accident Using a source too closely when paraphrasing without proper citation Building on someone’s ideas without citation Writing a paper that is fully cited, but with no original ideas from you What is Plagiarism?

Why might someone plagiarize?
Poor time management and planning skills Fear of your own ideas not being good enough Jumping through a hoop, not really learning the material It’s Faster! It’s Easier! It’s MORE FUN!!! It’s the I WON’T GET CAUGHT CLAUSE!!!! (um, yes, you will get caught.) Why might someone plagiarize?

Plagiarism Penalties Embarrassment Bad Grade—think zero Fail a Class
Removed from Honors or AP classes Expulsion from a school or university (tuition is NOT returned) Loss of credential or degree Loss of job Civil Damages—a legal judgment against you and you have to pay money to the original author/writer Plagiarism Penalties

Common methods of plagiarism
Cut and paste Downloading a paper off the internet Buying a paper from someone else Copying an article from the Web or an online/electronic database Copying a paper from a local source Quoting less than the words copied Faking a citation Paraphrasing someone else’s idea, putting in your own words and not citing the original source Common methods of plagiarism

1st Offense: Goal is to re-teach the policy Teacher/Student Conference Student informs parent Teacher follows up with parent Student must do the following: Appropriate apology letter to both teacher and parent Re-do the assignment within five school days for credit Resigns plagiarism policy and honor code WCSD Gifted and Talented Magnet Plagiarism policy

2nd Offense: Goal is enforce the policy and re-teach Teacher/Student Conference Student informs parent Teacher follows up with parent Office Referral for School Discipline Student must do the following: Appropriate apology letter to teacher, parent, and administrator Re-do the assignment within five school days for a maximum of half- credit Resigns plagiarism policy and honor code Meets requirements of school discipline WCSD Gifted and Talented Magnet Plagiarism policy

3rd Offense: Goal is enforcement of policy and cessation of behavior Teacher/Student/administrator Conference to discuss continual disregard for both the policy and the honor code. Participants will agree upon a course of action Student will NOT be allowed to make up assignment and will receive a zero. WCSD Gifted and Talented Magnet Plagiarism policy
