Figure 1 RNase E-Facilitated Negative Regulation of Gene Expression by sRNAs (A) Pairing of the sRNA to a region around the Shine-Dalgarno site (SD) blocks ribosome binding, allowing degradation of the mRNA; the sRNA is degraded as well. (B) The 5′-monophosphorylated sRNA pairs with the target mRNA; binding of the sRNA 5′ monophophate to RNase E stimulates cleavage of the mRNA by RNase E.
