Phonics consist of: Identifying sounds in spoken words. Blending phonemes into words for reading.. Segmenting words into phonemes for spelling.

4 Phonemes and Graphemes
Phonemes are the sounds Graphemes are the letters A grapheme may consist of one (l) two (sh) or more letters (igh) The same graphemes may represent more than one phoneme. (me, met) You Tube: Articulation of phonemes

5 Blending: Recognising the letter sounds in a written word, eg. C-u-p, sh-ee-p Merging them in the order in which they are written to pronounce the word: Cup, sheep.

6 Segmenting: Identifying the individual sounds in a spoken word e.g (h-i-m, s-t-or-k) and writing down letters for each sound (phoneme) to form the word: Him and stork. Segmenting sheet

7 Digraph: Two letters, which make one phoneme!!
A consonant digraph contains two consonants. E.g: sh, ck, th, ll A vowel digraph contains at least one vowel. Eg: ai, ee, ar, oy

8 Trigraph: Three letters which make one phoneme igh dge
How many words can you make with these graphemes in….?

9 Split Digraph: A Digraph in which the two letters are not together in the word. e.g a_e Make Bake Song: Cherries on a plate Using string/holding hands.

11 Remember… Phonics is the step up to word recognition
Automatic reading all words- decodable and tricky is the ultimate goal! Confidence in building word specific knowledge of the spelling of words. Continuous language development.
