2. Puritan Beliefs Everyone is born sinful
God only saves certain people that he chooses
Jesus died to save those chosen people, not everyone
Salvation can’t be earned or lost through good deeds, it’s just given to certain people
The Bible is the true law
Simplicity is important in clothing and lifestyle

People that aren’t chosen can’t be saved and will go to hell.

Doing good deeds and living a holey lifestyle won’t change your chances of being saved, but since they didn’t know who was chosen to be saved, they all lived saintly lives

Even though they came to the New World to escape religious persecution and to gain religious freedom, they punished any people who did not join the Puritan faith with fines, banishment, and beatings.

Changing economy meant they had to start industrializing which meant leading less simple lives.
International rulers such as the King of England threatened their small strict communities
Common people resented the few leaders that had power and began to rebel

Rationality made people rely on the Bible less literally for their connection with God

This idea set up the earliest Government when the Puritans first came to Massachusetts

Since the Church and the government are run by the same leaders, when the witches went against their religious views, the leaders hunted down the accused as law breakers.
