1 Photosynthesis vs. Cellular Respiration

2 Photosynthesis Occurs in chloroplasts of plants
What do plants need in order to grow? Water Sunlight Carbon dioxide What is produced as a waste product? Oxygen What is a product that plants use as food? Glucose

3 Chloroplast Structure
Inner membrane called the thylakoid membrane. Thickened regions called thylakoids. A stack of thylakoids is called a granum. (Plural – grana) Stroma is a liquid surrounding the thylakoids.

4 Photosynthesis Formula
6Co2 + 6H2O  C6H12O6 + 6O2

5 Cellular Respiration Takes place in the cytoplasm and mitochondria
3 Main steps Glycolysis – occurs in the cytoplasm Makes 2 ATP Krebs Cycle – occurs in the mitochondria Electron Transport Chain – occurs in the mitochondria Makes 34 ATP

6 Cellular Respiration Equation
C6H12O6 + 6O2  6Co2 + 6H2O + Energy

7 Comparing energy flow Cellular Respiration Photosynthesis Cytoplasm
Occurs in what organelle Cytoplasm Mitochondria Chloroplast Reactants C6H12O6 and O2 CO2 and H2O Products
