2 Presidential roles Chief of State – the ceremonial head of government
Chief Executive – vested with the executive power of the U.S. Chief Administrator – the director of the federal government Chief Diplomat – main architect of foreign policy Commander in Chief – over the nation’s entire military Presidential roles

3 Chief Legislator – main architect of public policy
Chief of Party – acknowledged leader of the political party that controls the executive branch Chief Citizen – the representative of all of the American people Balance the Ticket – choosing a running mate who can strengthen the presidential candidate’s chance of being elected

4 Electoral College – a group of people (electors) chosen from each state to formally select the President and Vice President Presidential Primary – an election in which the party’s voters express a preference for their party’s presidential nomination Platform – a political party’s formal statement of basic principles, stands on major policy matters, and objectives for the campaign and beyond

5 National Conventions – meetings at which the delegates vote to pick their presidential and vice- presidential candidates Electorate – mass of people who can cast a vote Keynote Address – speech given at the national convention to set the tone for the convention and the campaign to come
