5 Concept Formations: Forms of Gov’t
1. You will be working with the people you are sitting next to in order to complete the chart you picked up at the door. 2. You will use the packet given to your group to complete the chart. We will do Concept Example #1 first, then we will review it. After we have reviewed the first one, you will work on Concept Examples 2 and 3 before we review both of those. 3. DO NOT WRITE ON THE PACKET, PLEASE!

6 1. Democracy Citizens elect representatives (power to the people)
Main characteristics: Citizens elect representatives (power to the people) Concept of majority rule Individuals = personal rights System of checks and balances in place

7 2. Oligarchy Main characteristics:
Power rests with a few people or a dominant group in society Individuals = less personal rights No elected representation

8 3. Tyranny Main characteristics:
Form of government in which a leader is cruel and oppressive No power to the people at all (no elected representation, no personal rights) Government/leader = total control over all aspects of society (social structure, politics, religion, economy, etc.) Uses military to enforce laws, censorship, elimination of checks and balances

9 4. Monarchy Main characteristics:
The head of state is chosen based on birthright Hereditary Different types of monarchies: Symbolic (think GB today) Limited/Constitutional Absolute A monarchy is a form of government in which the head of state and/or government is chosen based on birthright. The monarch's title varies, but the best example is a king or a queen. Monarchies are less common in the 21st century than they were in the past, and the monarchies that do exist tend to be symbolic -- the king or queen is the head of state, representing his or her country but not actually weighing in on policy. 10 5. Aristocracy Main characteristics:
Power is in the hands of a few, privileged people (similar to oligarchy) People in power = noble by birth Limited power of the people, likely no elected representatives
