2 My blurgyblup went to the vet today
My blurgyblup went to the vet today. He chased a snopley up into a tree and hurt his paw. What is a blurgyblup? What is a snopley? How do you know?

3 Students will make inferences and gather meaning by using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown vocabulary. Objective

4 So what do we do with a context clue?
Readers use context clues to help them understand the text. We make inferences based on the clues the author leaves for us in the text.

5 Examples of Context Clues:
antonyms A word that has the opposite meaning in the sentence. The blade of grass was massive compared to the tiny ant. A word that has the same meaning is in the sentence. I hate, or detest eating onions. synonyms

6 Examples of Context Clues:
There is a clue in part of the unknown word. I think you are overreacting to this problem. Examples of Context Clues: The word is defined in the sentence (or a sentence nearby) The boy was unresponsive when he didn’t answer any of the questions we asked, Word parts definitions

7 Examples of Context Clues:
prefixes and suffixes Prefixes change root word meaning at the beginning, and suffixes change the meaning at the end. Independent and lifeless There is an example of the word nearby. A beverage, such as soda, water, or tea will be served. Key words: like, such, as, including, or examples

Now you’re going to create a story using your own context clues! Be creative! Make up your own words, but be sure to leave clues for the reader so they can identify the meaning!
