Evaluation of the Utility of Syndromic Surveillance for Rhinovirus Using Florida’s Syndromic Surveillance System (ESSENCE-FL ) Electronic Surveillance System for the Early Notification of Community-based Epidemics-Florida Heather Rubino PhD, Janet Hamilton MPH, David Atrubin MPH, Allison Culpepper BS - Florida Department of Health Results Background Rhinovirus surveillance in Florida relies on incomplete and/or untimely data from: National Respiratory and Enteric Surveillance System (incomplete, some-what timely) Hospital discharge data (HDD) from the Agency for Health Care Administration; (complete, not timely) The number of emergency department (ED) visits with a chief complaint of discharge diagnosis (CCDD) of rhinovirus has increased since 2013: HDD facilities: 2,358 patients identified with a rhinovirus diagnosis 74% were admitted Six of these 10 hospitals are large children’s hospitals! 5x3 ESSENCE-FL facilities: 581 visits identified 98.7% identified from DDs * Correlation of HDD and SyS surveillance for rhinovirus has improved! (coincides with more facilities sending data to ESSENCE-FL via HL7) Number of Visits * Research questions: Are these increases in CCDDs for rhinovirus representative of a true increase in disease? Can syndromic surveillance (SyS) be used for rhinovirus surveillance? Methods HDD queried for any diagnosis of Rhinovirus Query used: ICD-9 codes 079.3 Top 10 diagnosing rhinovirus hospitals retained for analysis ESSENCE-FL queried for Rhinovirus-associated CCDDs: Query used: ^rhinov^ Facilities were matched to the retained HDD facilities Conclusions 1- Comparing data from the state HDD to data captured in SyS can be used to evaluate the utility of existing syndromic surveillance systems for disease surveillance. 2- Previous analyses demonstrated that syndromic surveillance (SyS) for RSV is strong but SyS for rhinovirus needs further evaluation.
