This control extended to:

Social life
The economy
Politics

5. Broader causes of Absolutism
1. Decline of feudalism 2. Rise of cities 3. Growth of national kingdoms 4. Growing middle class -They wanted peace that monarchs could provide 5. Church authority broke down -Because of the Reformation

6. Immediate causes of Absolutism
A. On an immediate level, unrest in Europe led to Absolutism
Religious and territorial conflicts in Europe
B. Governments built armies and raised taxes as a result
Monarchs tried to centralize power to keep control

7. Survey of Absolutism Monarchs
With a partner at your table, you will explore the rule of 2 rulers from the Age of Absolutism
You may chose from Phillip II, Louis XIV, Catherine II, Peter I, Frederick the Great
You will be evaluating if the ruler STRENGTHENED or WEAKENED their country

8. You may verbally go over the answers to the reading questions, but should have a good understanding of the ruler
Then list 5 examples of how they strengthened or weakened their country
