1 Mental Math…be ready You need: Mar. 29, 2018 Clean paper (2) / Pencil
Warm Up: Mental Math…be ready I CAN: describe motion. Mar. 29, 2018

2 Today… In your textbook, turn to page 8.
You will find a rectangle on the upper left of the page with vocabulary. Write out each vocabulary word and define it – using the chapter, not the glossary.

3 Turn to page 8 Write out the three essential questions at the top of the page. You do NOT need to answer them…yet. Define the four vocabulary terms…using the chapter, not the glossary.

4 MOTION What is motion? How can you describe the motion of different objects? What does all motion have in common? As each object is shown, think about how you would describe its motion. Try to be thinking of a definition for motion that would fit all the different items!

5 How is it moving? D A B C E F G H I
I don’t always use these pictures. They were created by K.Thate – and were a great starting point in “describing motion” because it’s harder than it seems, but I do more “off the cuff” now. The big theme is to describe with change in position, supported by measurable data – and speed (+ direction) can be indicated by the amount of time to cover the distance. I

6 So…what is motion? Motion is a change in position over time!!

7 So…what is motion? Distance If you change your position,
then you have traveled some distance.

8 So…what is motion? Distance
How fast you travel that distance is your speed! (Speed is the RATE at which you change position).

9 Motion – Occurs when an object changes _____________ relative to a _____________ ____________.
position point reference

10 -Distance: how ________ an object has traveled.
-Displacement: ______________ and _____________ of an object’s change in position from the starting point. far distance direction

11 Speed – the _________________ an object travels per unit of _________________. Also known as the ____________ of change in position. distance time rate

12 Distance Length Amount of space between two given points
Does unit matter?

13 How can we describe motion?
Motion can be described by: DISTANCE (how far did it travel?) TIME (how long did it travel?) SPEED (how fast did it travel?) DIRECTION (which way did it go?) ACCELERATION (does the motion change?)

14 Metric System (remember?)
Why metric? US vs. World; accuracy; ease Based on 10s…not 12 or 3 or whatever Kilo, Hecto, Deka deci, centi, milli PRE-fixes

15 Metric Conversions Ladder Method
T. Trimpe

16 Basic UNIT Meters = length or distance Liters = volume
Grams = mass or weight

17 How many jumps does it take?
Ladder Method 1 2 3 KILO 1000 Units HECTO 100 Units DEKA 10 Units DECI 0.1 Unit Meters Liters Grams CENTI 0.01 Unit MILLI Unit How do you use the “ladder” method? 1st – Determine your starting point. 2nd – Count the “jumps” to your ending point. 3rd – Move the decimal the same number of jumps in the same direction. 4 km = _________ m Starting Point Ending Point How many jumps does it take? 4. 1 __. 2 __. 3 __. = 4000 m

18 Conversion Practice Try these conversions using the ladder method.
1000 mg = _______ g 1 L = _______ mL 160 cm = _______ mm 14 km = _______ m 109 g = _______ kg 250 m = _______ km Meters = length or distance Liters = volume Grams = mass or weight Compare using <, >, or =. 56 cm m 7 g mg

19 Metric Conversion Challenge
Write the correct abbreviation for each metric unit. 1) Kilogram _____ 4) Milliliter _____ 7) Kilometer _____ 2) Meter _____ 5) Millimeter _____ 8) Centimeter _____ 3) Gram _____ 6) Liter _____ 9) Milligram _____ Try these conversions, using the ladder method. 10) 2000 mg = _______ g 15) 5 L = _______ mL 20) 16 cm = _______ mm 11) 104 km = _______ m 16) 198 g = _______ kg 21) 2500 m = _______ km 12) 480 cm = _____ m 17) 75 mL = _____ L 22) 65 g = _____ mg 13) 5.6 kg = _____ g 18) 50 cm = _____ m 23) 6.3 cm = _____ mm 14) 8 mm = _____ cm 19) 5.6 m = _____ cm 24) 120 mg = _____ g

20 Compare using <, >, or =.
25) 63 cm m 27) 5 g mg 29) 1,500 mL L 26) 536 cm dm 28) 43 mg g 30) 3.6 m cm

22 Let’s measure Card tells you what to find and measure (in addition to the worksheet). Be accurate. Include units. Write your answers onto your own notebook paper.

23 HW: Be sure to finish the classwork – 6 statements and whether or not you agree/disagree with support. Write out the three essential questions and define the four key terms. Finish the front of the Metric Mania Conversions page. You are simply practicing conversion using the ladder method.
