2 What is migration? The movement of people from one place to another.
Usually involves permanent relocation. People began migrating out of African between 1-2 million years ago. Why do people leave? Push Factors – something that causes people to leave an area Pull Factors- something that attracts people to a new location

3 Push & Pull Factors Push & Pull factors can be individualized or affect an entire region. Examples: Environmental Political unrest War Discrimination Employment Physical geography

4 Economic One of the largest factors in migration is economic
Overpopulation Lack of employment opportunities Higher wages More job opportunities Variety of job opportunities

5 Ravenstein’s Principals of Migration
Every migration flow generates a return or countermigration. The majority of migrants move a short distance. Migrants who move longer distances tend to choose big-city destinations Urban residents are less migratory than inhabitants of rural areas. Families are less likely to make international moves than young adults.
