The Periodic Table Below is the Periodic Table as it would normally appear -the lanthanide series (or rare earths), which are radioactive, and actinide series were separated for easier viewing
2
The Periodic Table -properties in both series tend to be similar due to electron configurations -they all generally have 3 electrons for bonding -they usually combine with halogens to form MX3, such as LaF3 -transactinide elements begin with Rutherfordium, element 104
3
The Periodic Table -All elements above 92 are man made and discovered through experiments -they were found through the use of accelerators which smash nuclei together
4
The Periodic Table -Ernest Lawrence of UC Berkeley invented one of the most powerful accelerators, the cyclotron -Many transactinide elements such as 97-Berkelium, 98-Californium, 103-Lawrencium, and 106-Seaborgium were discovered at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory -some transactinide elements, like plutonium, are made in nuclear reactors

Element Scavenger Hunt
1. What are 3 elements named after planets? 2. What are 3 elements named after countries? 3. Find 1 element named after a famous scientist? (Hint: there are at least 9) 4. What is the atomic number of promethium? 5. What is the atomic mass of cerium? 6. What is one element named after a state in America? 7. Which element has the lowest atomic number?
