A British cartoon published in May 1919 about the peace settlement The four men are the representatives of Britian, Italy, France and the USA, the main countries who drew up the Treaty of Versailles. What can this tell us about how the treaty was seen at the time?

Could the Treaty of Versailles be justified at the time?
L/O: To investigate views at the time and in hindsight to decide how fair was the Treaty of Versailles Hindsight! When we look back in History we can see that the Treaty of Versailles was partly responsable for starting WW2 and for Hitler´s rise to power. But this is easy to see now as we have the benefit of HINDSIGHT! This means looking back and judging events with an open mind. There are TWO arguments about the treaty! 1: It was considered fair at the time by most people outside of Germany after the horror of WW1! A lighter treaty would have been unacceptable to most people then! The best result were achieved at the time and they could not know what the future held! Germany was not totally destroyed and recovered quickly. 2. The Treaty was far too harsh on Germany and they were bound to react. It made another war inevitable and can be seen as the blame for Hitler rise to power.
