Introduction to Short Story Unit

2 Prepare for Notes Fold the paper in half vertically (like a “hotdog”).
Label the left column “NOTES ON ELEMENTS OF PLOT” Label the right column “MY THOUGHTS, EXAMPLES, OR CONNECTIONS”

4 Plot (definition) Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. Every plot is made up of a series of incidents that are related to one another.

5 1. Exposition The exposition gives the reading the background information This usually occurs at the beginning of a short story. Here the characters are introduced. We also learn about the setting of the story. Most importantly, we are introduced to the main conflict (main problem).

6 2. Rising Action This part of the story begins to develop the conflict(s). A building of interest or suspense occurs.

7 3. Climax This is the turning point of the story.
Usually the main character comes face to face with a conflict. The main character will change in some way.

8 4. Falling Action All loose ends of the plot are tied up.
The conflict(s) and climax are taken care of.

9 5. Resolution The story comes to a reasonable ending.
Usually the conflict is resolved.

11 Other Important Literary Terms
Setting- the time and place in which the action of a literary work occurs. Conflict- There are 5 basic types of conflict: Man vs. Man Man vs. Nature (Supernatural) Man vs. Self Man vs. Society Man vs. Fate (God) Irony- The Difference between what appears to be and what really is.

14 THEME The theme of a book is a universal idea or message that stretches through an entire story. It is often a lesson that we learn about life or people. Examples of common Themes: Change versus tradition Coming of age Everlasting love Evils of racism Power and corruption
