1 Hyper-Converged Technology a User's Perspective

2 SFX Overview St Francis Xavier College is located in Florey, ACT
SFX is a systemic catholic college catering for years 7 to 12 students. Enrolment is approximately 1200 students The college runs a full 1 to 1 program with iPads for years 7 & 8 Laptops for years 9 to 12

3 Goals for the Server Upgrade
Reduce complexity Provide improved performance Have quality external support Integrate with the current backup system Minimise down time during the upgrade Achieve 5 years of trouble free use

4 Key Considerations Resources – Compute, Memory, Storage Network
Simplicity – simple to install and maintain Support – readily available high level support Simple, robust snapshots at VM level

5 Compute-Memory-Network
Compute refers to the processing power Old system used 5% of 115 GHz Memory refers to Random Access Memory Old system used 200 GB of 280 Gb – 70% Network refers to connectivity Old system had dual 10 Gb Ethernet links with utilisation less than 5 % at peak loads

6 The Old System

7 DeDuplication Statisitics
Storage Current RAW Storage Provisioned 28.24 Used 10.83 38% Free 17.41 62% The problem with the old system was that the storage consisted of 6 distinct data stores which were too small for the larger VMs. DeDuplication Statisitics TYPE TB DDR Space required DB 0.8 3 0.27 EXCHANGE 0.6 2.5 0.24 FILE-Data 4 1.6 FILE-images 1 contains video and pictures and will grow over time VSI 1.4 5 0.28 VIDEO 1.7 ClickView needs to be included BACKUP 11.7 IGNORE as Veeam will go to a QNAP 11.00 6.59 Nutanix useable 21.51 3.24 ‘ times current requirements in ONE DataStore

8 Options Converged Server / SAN approach
Dell servers with Dell SC4020 SAN Dell servers with Nimble SAN Hyper-Converged Web-Scaled System ( as used by Amazon / Google ) Nutanix Simplivity ( not really Web-Scale compliant as it requires a controller card per node )

9 What is Hyper-Converged?
A Hyper-Converged solution combines servers and storage into a single appliance.

10 What is Web-Scale ? Web-Scale consists of 5 major concepts
Hyper-convergence on x86 servers All intelligence in software 100% software defined Distributed everything Cluster-wide data and services Self-healing system API-driven automation and analytics

19 SFX vSphere Data Stores

20 SFX Nutanix Performance

21 Hypervisors Nutanix supports three hypervisors
vSphere Hyper-V AHV ( native ) SFX currently has 2+ years of vSphere licensing but will move to AHV once Veeam fully supports AHV. This will save the college $12k annually.

22 Prisim Hypervisor Integration

23 Has Nutanix met the Server Upgrade Goals ?
Nutanix has significantly reduce complexity System performance has exceeded my expectations. Nutanix has the best support I have ever experienced Nutanix works seamlessly with Veeam & vmware Upgrading to Nutanix was quick, simple and stress free Achieve 5 years of trouble free use – not a single Nutanix issue after 18 months

24 Any Negatives ? Server rack no longer looks impressive ???

25 Live Demonstration
