R&B artist who laid the foundation for Rock and Roll music Grew up 1 of 9 siblings in a musical family in Louisiana - learned piano at age 7 Dropped out of school at 14 to pursue music Signed with Imperial Records in 1949 First hit: “The Fat Man” Distinctive piano playing style and mellow baritone voice made him stand out Quiet and private man - disliked publicity Refused to attend the ceremony when inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Turned down invitation to play at the White House. Richard Wayne Penniman
Influenced by pentecostal church singing and theatrics Flair for flamboyant performances and costumes Driving piano and crooning/wailing singing - style he developed from church as a child Was an inspiration for The Beetles and other artists such as James Brown: 1955 “Tutti-Frutti” was an instant hit The Beetles covered “Long Tall Sally”, at a time when Richard stopped writing rock music and focused on evangelism and gospel: Richard returned to rock afterward In 1986 was one of the 10 original inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Jerry Lee Lewis 1935 - Singer, Pianist
Born into a strict religious family in Louisiana Began playing piano at age 9, in the style of preachers and black musicians he heard as a child Flamboyant, uptempo piano style and famous stage antics (once even setting a piano on fire) BQc (from the biopic Great Balls of Fire) Career was derailed when he caused an international scandal by marrying his 13-year- old cousin (his 3rd marriage) Saw later success as a Country music artist, but never completely left Rock and Roll Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in one of the first. 1941 - “The King of the Twist”
Most famous for his hit, “The Twist”. Influenced by Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Lee Lewis. His dance moves accompanying “The Twist” are part of what made it a sensation. Signed with Cameo-Parkway Records in 1959 “The Twist” rose to the no. 1 Billboard spot in September In January 1962, it topped the chart again.
