1 TERM DEFINITION 1. Monopoly A. Refers to owners of monopolies, like Carnegie. 2. Social Darwinism B. The idea that the wealthy have a duty to give back to their communities by building and funding education and arts programs. 3. Laissez-faire C. A type of company that controls an entire industry; no competition, aka “trust” 4. Captains of Industry/Robber Barons D. The idea that the poor were “inferior” and the rich were “superior” 5. Gospel of Wealth E. The government cannot interfere with your business.

Overcharged NYC for public projects Charged $13million for a new courthouse; only cost $3million.

6 Patronage Giving a government job to someone for financial/political support. SPOILS SYSTEM

7 Reform On July 2, 1881, President Garfield was shot and killed by a lawyer who had refused to give a job. Pendleton Civil Service Act – government jobs could not be given out; only the most qualified would be hired.
