1. Asian Stereotypes – Warm-Up
Brainstorm a list of all the stereotypes you can think of related to ASIANS. (We did some of these the other day; you can use the same ones but try to add more as well.)

2. Anti-Chinese Sentiment/Racism
There is a long history of anti-Chinese sentiment in the United States.

3. Yellow Peril/Yellow Terror
Color metaphor for race – based on the skin color of East Asians
Originated in the late 19th century with Chinese immigrants as coolie slaves or laborers in the United States
Later associated with the Japanese during the mid-20th century, especially after the Japanese attacks during World War 2
Eventually extended to all Asians of East and Southeast Asian descent.
Symbolizes:
general racism over the skin color
the fear that the mass immigration of Asians threatened white wages and standards of living
the fear that they would eventually take over and destroy western civilization, replacing it with their ways of life and values

9. Terms to Know
Coolie: A label applied to a slave or unskilled manual laborer from Asia, particularly if they were from Southern China, the Indian subcontinent, the Philippines or Indonesia.
Chink: A racial slur applied to Chinese or people of Chinese descent, specifically those with yellow skin and/or slanty eyes.
