3 Yellow Peril/Yellow Terror
Color metaphor for race – based on the skin color of East Asians Originated in the late 19th century with Chinese immigrants as coolie slaves or laborers in the United States Later associated with the Japanese during the mid-20th century, especially after the Japanese attacks during World War 2 Eventually extended to all Asians of East and Southeast Asian descent. Symbolizes: general racism over the skin color the fear that the mass immigration of Asians threatened white wages and standards of living the fear that they would eventually take over and destroy western civilization, replacing it with their ways of life and values
