1 REVIEW FOR POPULATION CRQ EXAM

2 This PowerPoint should help guide you for the CRQ exam
This PowerPoint should help guide you for the CRQ exam. You can use my suggestions, but make sure you work hard to develop detailed explanations for both questions.

3 QUESTION #1 Country Population Age 65 or Older, 2000 (Percent)
Change in Proportion 65 or Older (Percent) Belgium 17 28 65 Denmark 15 24 59 Japan 32 86 Russian Federation 13 25 100 Ukraine 14 27 91 United Kingdom 16 56 The average age of the population in selected developed countries listed in the table above has been increasing. Identify and explain two reasons that the average population age is increasing in developed countries. Identify and explain one social consequence and one economic consequence that countries face as their populations age.

4 DEVELOP A DETAILED EXPLANATION!
A. Identify and explain two reasons that the average population age is increasing in developed countries. REASON #1 = REDUCED FERTILITY REASON #2 = INCREASED LIFE EXPECTANCY FOR EACH REASON, DEVELOP A DETAILED EXPLANATION!

5 B. Identify and explain one social consequence and one economic consequence that countries face as their populations age. POSSIBLE SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES INCREASED IMMIGRATION PRO-NATALIST POLICIES DECLINE IN SERVICES FOR YOUNG INCREASE IN SERVICES FOR ELDERLY POSSIBLE ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES HIGH ELDERLY DEPENDENCY RATIO GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS/TAXES SPENT ON ELDERLY SHORTAGE OF WORKERS CHOOSE 1 SOCIAL CONSEQUENCE AND 1 ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCE. FOR EACH, DEVELOP A DETAILED EXPLANATION!

6 QUESTION #2 2. International migration in the late twentieth century illustrates many important geographic principles. A. Define each of the following principles: Core-periphery Distance decay Chain migration B. For each principle in part a, select a migration stream identified by letter on the map and discuss how the stream you chose illustrates the principle. Note: Each lettered stream may be used only once

7 A. Define each of the following principles.
CORE-PERIPHERY DISTANCE DECAY CHAIN MIGRATION

8 A. Define each of the following principles.
CORE-PERIPHERY UNEVEN DISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH AND POWER IN THE WORLD. THE CORE COUNTRIES HAVE STRONG ECONOMIES AND ARE POLITICALLY POWERFUL/STABLE. THE PERIPHERY HAVE WEAK ECONOMIES AND ARE POLITICALLY UNSTABLE. AS A RESULT, PEOPLE MIGRATE FROM PERIPHERY COUNTRIES TO CORE COUNTRIES. DISTANCE DECAY WITH INCREASING DISTANCE, THERE IS DECREASING INTERACTION. AS A RESULT, MOST MIGRATIONS WILL BE TO A LOCATION THAT IS CLOSE. CHAIN MIGRATION MIGRATION THAT FOLLOWS FRIENDS/FAMILY TO A NEW LOCATION. THIS MAKES MIGRATION TRANSITIONS EASIER BECAUSE PEOPLE WILL BE CLOSE TO THOSE WHO THEY KNOW AND WHO HAVE THE SAME CULTURE.

9 B. For each principle in part A, select a migration stream identified by a letter on the map and discuss how the stream illustrates the principle. Which migration stream illustrates core-periphery? Note: Each letter may only be used once. Choose a different one for each principle. So if you choose stream C for core-periphery, you cannot choose it again for distance decay even though it works for either principle. Which migration stream illustrates distance decay? Which migration stream illustrates chain migration?

10 CORE-PERIPHERY Example of stream that would work:
Stream C – people are leaving Africa (periphery) and migrating to Europe (core) EXPAIN!!!

11 DISTANCE DECAY Example of stream that would work:
Stream B – people are leaving Mexico and migrating to U.S. because it is close by EXPLAIN!!!

12 CHAIN MIGRATION Example of stream that would work:
Stream A – people are leaving Asia and following friends/family to western U.S. and Canada (can connect to Chinatown in San Francisco) EXPLAIN!!!
