3. Black History Month is a remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African descendents. Since 1976, it is celebrated annually in the United States of America and Canada in February and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the month of October.

5. Why do we celebrate Black History Month?
Black History Month originated in America in the 1920s, after a historian was dismayed by the lack of history books which covered black history.
Why do you think few history books focussed on black history?
The segregation that occurred in the US during the 1940s and 1950s reflected widespread attitudes of the time; the white people were superior to black people. This stems from America’s slavery industry, where millions of Africans were brought to America to work as slaves.
What do you know about civil rights and slavery?
Even today, the fight for equality is not over – Black History Month represents a small step towards celebrating and acknowledging African American culture.
