Lesson 14 A technical drawing needs at least 3 linetypes: thin and continuous, thick and continuous, thin and dash-dotted (for symmetry lines). In AutoCAD three ”layers” are needed for this. Every layer can have one and only one linewidth, type and color. Of course layers can have many more utilizations: e.g. on the same drawing every engineer can have his/her own – password protected – layers to do his/her task without interfering with the others. Lesson 14 By clicking here you get the layer specification window. Layer 0 is always given. You specify a new one. You can give them names immediately. The linewidth can be changed by double-clicking it. For linetype you must load the possibilities. Let us choose DASHDOT2. Now the layers are ready, this window may be closed. The actual layer can be changed here. Technical drawing in Photonics

Lesson 14 Let us draw an object. Switch to the thick layer. Start with a rectangle. The first corner and an other corner should be specified. It is outside this working area. By the ”hand-tool” (from the toolbar on the right) the ”paper” can be moved into a proper position. With the scroll-wheel of the mouse the proper magnification can be obtained. By clicking here (arrow!) the corner can be rounded off. The radius can be given. Then the two lines of the corner should be clicked (arrows!). Do the same with the lower corner, too. Lesson 14 A circle is placed to the proper position. By clicking the ARRAY button a window appears. Every value must be set then click to the ”Select objects” button. Click to select. Finish the selection by ENTER. The window re-appears. Click OK. Here (arrow!) you can find the polygon command. Give the number of sides. Give the center. Specify whether it is inside a circle or outside and give the radius. Here it is. Switch to the symm layer to draw the symmetry lines. Technical drawing in Photonics

Lesson 14 For dimensioning use the dimension menu. Select the proper one: linear, diameter or jogged radius. The jogged radius is a multiple-click operation and can be done to result a straight line. It is finished. Switch this button (arrow!) to show/hide line thickness. By clicking here (arrow!) the ”Save as…” button can be found. Technical drawing in Photonics

Lesson 14 An other drawing. Start with symm layer. Draw a vertical line. Draw a circle. Switch to thick layer and draw three circles like shown. Use the ARRAY but now the polar array. Be sure to check this box. Select the line and the smallest circle. Finish selection with ENTER. Click OK. Polar array is done. By clicking here (arrow!) parallel offset can be done. Distance is needed then click on what you wish to double parallel then on what side you wish. Select these lines and while they are selected switch to thick layer. The lines will change layer. Lesson 14 With the trim command some lines will be cut. All involved lines should be selected. After pressing ENTER you may click again. This time every line or arc disappears if clicked. Cutting is done. Now the dimensioning is next. And finally switch to show thick line. Technical drawing in Photonics
