5 Conception & Pregnancy

Amniocentesis- older test to detect abnormalities Chorionic Villus Sampling- newer test, chorion from the placenta is removed Ultrasound- picture of fetus

14 Birth Stages Labor- contractions begin (lasts awhile)
Delivery- ½ hour to 2 hours…actual birth of baby Afterbirth- 3rd stage, consists of delivery of the placenta (15-30 minutes)

15 APGAR SCORE Take 2X’s…immediately after birth and roughly 5 minutes later. Score of 0-10 Heartrate Breathing Muscle Tone Reaction to Stimulus Skin color

16 Complications Ectopic pregnancy- implantation occurs in the fallopian tube Miscarriage- Expulsion of dead zygote, blastocyst, embryo, or fetus Stillbirth- birth of a dead full-term fetus Toxemia- HBP, protein in urine, swelling Rh Factor- Mother and Fetus’s blood protein differ
