1 Good afternoon! Please get out your… Major Themes Sheet
Project chart, notes & project assignment sheet. Find a place in your notes to do an OMCL.

2 OMCL "A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved—I do not expect the house to fall—but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery, will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the states, old as well as new—North as well as South. Have we no tendency to the latter condition? Let any one who doubts, carefully contemplate that now almost complete legal combination— piece of machinery so to speak—compounded of the Nebraska doctrine, and the Dred Scott decision. SOURCE: Abraham Lincoln – From the “House Divided” Speech, 1858

3 Group Projects: Part 3 GQ#2 - Why did the Compromise of 1850 break down so quickly? GQ#3 - Why did the Republicans win the 1860 presidential election? Collaborate & Share Info – complete charts Rank top 3 events – significance in bringing on the Civil War Discuss with your group and COME UP WITH A PLAN to create some sort of timeline of the 1850s that helps us understand why the Compromise of 1850 broke down so quickly, the rise of the Republican Party in 1860, and the origins of the Civil War. Your group is free to create your timeline in whatever format you choose, as long as it identifies and explains the significance of events, and it clearly indicates which events were the more significant ones – see your rankings above. What was the most significant event? What was next? Etc.
