2 A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea

3 Subject (noun): Who or What did it?
Predicate: What did he, she, they, or it do? Verb + when, how, why, and to what extent Parts of the predicate can be moved to the beginning of the sentence

4 Last night, she played basketball.
Ex. Last night, she played basketball. Predicate S V Also, part of the Predicate

5 A coordinating conjunction is a word that connects ideas or clauses
A coordinating conjunction is a word that connects ideas or clauses. Use the acronym FANBOYS to remember these conjunctions. For But And Or Nor Yet So For can sometimes be a preposition, so watch out for this. Example: She bought supplies for the classroom.

6 A subordinating conjunction is a word that is often
found at the beginning of a dependent clause. It connects dependent clause to the independent clause in a complex sentence.

7 Independent Clause Dependent Clause
A group of words with a subject and a verb(predicate) It expresses one complete thought. Aka simple sentence A group of words with a subject and a verb (predicate) Has a subordinating conjunction (a white bus) Does not express a complete thought/cannot stand alone

9 A simple sentence is a sentence with one independent clause
A simple sentence is a sentence with one independent clause. It contains a subject and predicate, and it expresses a complete thought. 1 Subject + 1 Predicate Compound Subject + predicate Subject + Compound Predicate Compound Subject + Compound Predicate Fernando wore a yellow shirt. Fernando and Micah wore yellow shirts. Gael wore a yellow shirt and brought an extra shirt for David. Tabitha and Eliese completed their work early and had time to tutor some of their classmates.

10 A compound sentence is made up of two or more independent clauses or simple sentences joined together by a comma and coordinating conjunction.

11 Example: I wanted to go to the mall, but my sister-in-law had other plans, so we postponed our trip.

She studied for her test, and she turned in her project on time. My own example:

13 A complex sentence is a sentence with one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. Because it contains a dependent clause, it will contain a subordinating conjunction (A White Bus).

14 There are 2 ways to write a complex sentence.
Independent clause + dependent clause. Dependent clause + comma, + independent clause.

15 Before she went to school, she fed her pet dog.
She fed her pet dog before she went to school.

16 A compound complex sentence is made up of two or more independent clauses joined together with a coordinating conjunction + dependent clause (dependent clauses contain subordinating conjunctions).

17 Even though I love books, I did not like that one, but I still
read the entire book.
