Bell ringer: Is water created or destroyed? Why or why not?
Nitrogen Cycle Bell ringer: Is water created or destroyed? Why or why not?
2
Law of Conservation of Mass
Matter can neither be created nor destroyed. So when a puddle evaporates, water isn’t being destroyed. Instead is has changed from liquid water to gaseous water. The same law applies to all matter on Earth.
3
Elements of Life
4
Nitrogen Nitrogen is a very important element found in living organisms. All living organisms need nitrogen to live because it is a key component of DNA. Much like water, nitrogen is recycled constantly through the nitrogen cycle.
5
Nitrogen Cycle Nitrogen can be found in many different forms: Nitrates
Nitrites Ammonia Atmospheric nitrogen
6
Nitrogen Cycle Note that there is no way for nitrogen to go directly to the animal or plant. It is first converted thanks to bacteria!
7
Nitrogen Nitrogen Fixation- when bacteria change nitrogen from atmospheric form (unusable) to a usable form.
8
Nitrogen in Fertilizer
Most of the time when you fertilize plants, you add nitrogen to the soil. Fertilizer also includes Phosphorus and Potassium
9
Math Practice The numbers on a fertilizer bag tell the percent of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Complete the math practice sheet in class.
