1 Objective- To use variables in formulas to describe situations.
Formula- an equation which defines the relationship of one variable to other variables or numbers. A = L w L Area is described in terms of length and width. w

2 h 1 A = b h 2 b A is given in terms of b and h.

3 A perfect game in bowling is 300. Most players play with a handicap.
H= Handicap A= Average bowling score H = 0.8(200 - A) If my average is 130 and Mr. Roberts is 185, find our handicaps.

4 Estimate the number of cars allowed on a freeway.
N = estimated # of cars allowed on a roadway. L = # of lanes on the road. d = length of road (ft.) s = average speed (mph) 20 L d N = 600 + s 2 Problem: Find N if the length of the road is 200 yards, the number of lanes is 3, and the average speed is 60mph.

5 Volume of the Earth V = r 4 3 Volume Formula of a sphere Problem:
If the radius of the earth is approximately 8000 miles, find its volume.
