Directions to Activity
(Optional) Dress up for the lesson. Wear an apron and bakery chef hat as you guide students through the lesson. Have students form different groups with a minimum of 4-5 people. Have students rotate turns to allow each member of their group a chance to complete the customer’s order. If a group member is having trouble inform students to help that member of the group. You, the teacher, will read each order (word problem) to the entire class. When you say for example “Molly wants 1 cookie” students are to take one cookie from the plate and place it on the baking pan. Then you will say “….plus 2 doughnuts.” Students will take the two doughnuts from the plate and place it on the pan as well. Finally you will ask “how many items does Molly have in all” you and students will count each item on the pan aloud to found out the answer. Which in Molly’s order would be 3 items. After the order is complete, students are to remove the items from the pan and place them back on the appropriate plate. Each group member should help during this process for a smooth transition to the next order. (CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT) Remember to inform your students to not eat the items. There be customers who will give them an item to eat. Only at that time are they aloud to eat an item. Be sure to reinforce your classroom rules if needed.

Reflect and Share Reflect on you experience of doing this first grade activity on adding and subtracting. Do you believe this activity met the TEAM standard for activities and materials? Lets review the sub-objectives of the standard Reflect on how much high school students dislike math. What type of activity similar to this would engage them in a math lesson?
