Tony Stark is investigating a new metal for his Iron Man suit
Tony Stark is investigating a new metal for his Iron Man suit. He is comparing Metal A with Metal B by measuring the depth at which bullets penetrate each. He predicts that Metal A will withstand the bullets better because it is the same metal Captain America uses for his shield. 5) What is the independent variable in Story 1? Type of metal 6) What is the dependent variable in Story 1? Depth of damage 7) Does Mr. Stark have a theory or a hypothesis about which metal is better? How can you tell? Hypothesis – not enough tests to be a theory, but based on research (same metal as Capt. America)

Dr. Bruce Banner would like very much to not rip his shirt every time he turns into the Hulk – it gets expensive buying a new shirt each time he gets angry and Shield doesn’t pay that much. He wants to compare a cotton blend shirt with a nylon blend shirt. He will test the shirts by seeing which one rips most easily when pulled one with a constant force. He’s heard that nylon would be better, but hasn’t researched or seen that personally.

8) What is the independent variable in Story 2? Shirt Material (cotton vs. nylon) 9) What is the dependent variable in Story 2? How easily it rips – the rip-ability 10) Does Dr. Bruce Banner have a hypothesis or just a guess? How can you tell? Guess

Wind speed, wind direction, size of bullseye
Hawkeye and Black Widow have a bet – Hawkeye thinks he can hit the bullseye on a target from 100 yards away, but Black Widow thinks he can only hit the bullseye on a target from 50 yards. They test this by having Hawkeye shoot his bow and arrow – first from the 50 yard line of a football field, then from one end zone to the other. 11) What is the independent variable in Story 3? The distance 12) What is the dependent variable in Story 3? Hawkeye’s Accuracy (if he hits or misses) 13) What are 3 things that would need to be kept constant for this experiment to work? Wind speed, wind direction, size of bullseye

Thor makes an observation that the more times he swings his hammer, the higher he is able to jump.
14) Write a comparative question that Thor could turn into a scientific experiment. Which will make me fly higher – if I swing my hammer 10 times or if I swing my hammer 20 times? 15) What are the independent and dependent variables in this experiment? Independent – How many swings Dependent – Height of flight
