Examples Claim: Learning to read was a formative experience for the author. Claim: Learning to read was important to the author because being a reader shaped his identity. Claim: Books have the power to change and even save lives. Claim: Education is a means of fighting low expectations and oppression. Central Idea: Books are powerful; they shape our identities, give us opportunities for education, and help us fight oppression.
